Job Description
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
We are seeking to appoint maternity cover for an Advanced Research Assistant to take part in a mutation discovery and phenotype analysis programme for Xenopus tropicalis genetics. The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of the day-to-day work of the programme which is designed to identify nonsense mutations in 175 genes and to provide the research community with a baseline phenotype of mutants in each gene.
Essential Skills
You will need to have a good working knowledge of molecular biology and animal genetics typically gained through a degree in biological sciences. You will have applied this knowledge within a laboratory environment and have excellent practical skills in molecular biology techniques. You will have excellent organisational and record keeping skills and be able to work without supervision. Candidates must have a good eye for detail, be methodical and technically minded and hold excellent communication skills with the ability to coordinate research with other team members with an adaptable approach to their workload. You must have demonstrable computer skills.
Ideal Skills
Experience with X. tropicalis or other genetic model organisms would be an advantage.
Other information
This is a fixed-term maternity cover position and will continue until the postholder returns to work after her period of maternity leave. Due to the nature of the contract no minimum or maximum period of employment can be guaranteed. The maximum period of maternity leave available to our employees is 12 months.
