Job Description
Salary range £21115 to £27999 pa dependent on experience
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
We are looking to recruit a Group Secretary to support the Pathogen Research Administrator to underpin the research of the Pathogen Faculty teams. The key area of the role includes providing a comprehensive secretarial support to the Head of the Department, Faculty, Senior Managers and associated team members. This is made up of tasks such as minute taking, document reformatting, arranging internal, external and departmental meetings, booking visitors travel and accommodation, processing expense claims, liaising with the travel coordinators to book appropriate travel itineraries, reimbursements from third parties and reconciliation of monthly business credit card statements. This is a varied, rewarding role in an interesting and exciting research area.
The Pathogen Genetics Programme is one of the 4 main scientific research areas at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and is represented on the Board of Management by Professor Gordon Dougan. The Programme is comprised of several academic faculty teams: Microbial Pathogenesis, Pathogen Genomics, Parasite Genomics, Virus Genomics, Cell Surface Signalling Laboratory, Mass Spectrometry and finally, the Malaria Programme which is sub-divided into three programmes. The researchers use a combination of genotypic and phenotypic approaches to characterise bacteria, eukaryotic parasites (including the malaria parasite) and viruses that affect human health. Key aims are to identify the full extent of genetic variation in disease-causing organisms and to identify variants that influence their spread or interaction with human and veterinary hosts. Complementary studies investigate variation in the host that affects interactions with pathogens.
Essential Skills
The successful candidate must be proactive, have a flexible approach, be able to manage competing priorities in an ever-changing workload and be able to work to tight deadlines at short notice. You must be able to professionally communicate both on the phone and in person with both internal and external visitors and liaise with other secretarial staff (e.g. attending Board of Management Assistants meetings, monthly meetings, providing cover on a shared basis) so that best practice can be developed and appropriate secretarial cover is maintained in the Institute.
